Woody Allen says something profound

So the secret of comedy is this big huge mystery to everyone.  My wonderful comedy writing professor at UCLA's graduate film department (I go to school here--shout!), the incomparable Fred Rubin once spent a three hour lecture period  thoroughly breaking down the various types of humor there are, specifically in relation to television comedy. Sex humor I was already familiar with, but food humor was something new. And I learned that as a rule of thumb, character and situational humor are to be embraced, whereas puns are to be avoided like territorial gang members in dark alleyways. 

For someone that studies humor and aspires to be a humorist, all the various ins and outs of comedy can disturbingly daunting. "Wait does this mean I have to watch all those episodes of 'Flying Circus' AND read that 5-foot stack of Restoration comedy plays and commit all those Abbott and Costello sketches to memory? Goddamn me, I'm not going to sleep for the rest of my life!" 

It can all be so very, very complicated.

And it can all be so very, very simple.

As Woody Allen says--

"It's funny if it makes you laugh."

And that pretty much settles that.
